KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) Kansas City’s garden city approved a $1-million project Monday to grow tomatoes for a $50,000-a-year salary for the city’s mayor and four city employees.
Kansas City Council members agreed to the $1,000 per month wage increase for the council’s executive, deputy and finance directors.
They will also be allowed to vote on whether to hire one more employee for the position.
Councilman Paul Johnson said the mayor and city employees are being paid too much and that the council must increase the money they’re paid.
Johnson said council members also agreed to give the mayor the ability to hire a lawyer for legal defense.
Johnson said councilwoman Candice Blevins-Williams was the only council member who opposed the salary increase.
Council members voted 3-2 in favor of the pay increase and council members are expected to vote in favor Monday.
The council voted 4-3 to approve the pay hike and council is expected to approve it Tuesday.
