Home decor is a big topic for many people, and we’ve rounded up the top 10 tips and tricks to make your home the most perfect.
Don’t buy the best house you can afford, it may be the wrong choice for you.
Buy a one-bedroom flat with no pets, or a two-bedroom, three-bathroom house, or the smallest, cheapest house.
These are all options, and they’ll make a big difference in the quality of your home.
Don’ t put too much pressure on yourself.
“You have to think about how much time you have left,” says David Smith, a property consultant based in London.
“If you don’t think you have time, you won’t buy.”
Make a commitment.
If you can, get a mortgage or a lease and set aside a certain amount of money each month to cover your expenses.
“It’s about not having the choice of being too expensive, and letting yourself go,” says Smith.
“That’s the only way you can do it, to build the right balance between getting the best value for money and not having to be overly demanding on yourself.”
Buy something with a little personality.
“The only way to find something unique is to be willing to try new things,” says Matthew D’Agostino, a former professional designer.
“For example, you can’t afford to go out in the world without a stylish coat, so you can get something that’s a little bit quirky, but also fits the look of your style.”
Go to the movies.
“I’m always surprised how many people don’t go to the cinema for their entertainment,” says D’ Agostino.
“So, you need to make a choice, and it can’t be cheap.
If the price is too expensive and you’re stuck, you should consider going to the theatre or to a cinema and see what’s on offer.”
Buy things that are special to you.
You can buy a beautiful dress, or make your own dress with a custom pattern.
But what’s really special is that you’re going to love your work of art, and you’ll feel good about it.
“As you get older, you’ll be able to do more with your own hands, and the same goes for art, or you can work on your craft, and have it made in your home,” says Paul, a professional photographer based in Melbourne.
Take time for your pets.
“Owning a pet will make you feel better, and make your life easier,” says Steve.
“They can make your house a little more special, too.”
Make it personal.
“Make it personal,” says Michelle.
“Take care of the house, and don’t leave it to strangers.”
“Have fun with it,” says John.
“Get creative with the wallpaper and decorating.
Make some new ideas and go from there.”
Buy only the things you need.
“Buy only the essentials,” says Susan.
“Don’t buy a new house with just the essentials.
It will take a long time to get your house to where it needs to be.”
